Why three quotes never match

Three quotes, three numbers, and nobody tells you what changed.

Window treatments are hard to compare because the thing being quoted is different every time: how much fabric goes into the pleat, what the panel is lined with, who hems it, who hangs it, and whether the motor was planned or added at the end.

A catalog quote

  • The fabric is whatever the catalog carries this season, in the widths it comes in.
  • Fullness is not on the quote. Less fabric in the pleat is the easiest way to win on price, and it only shows once the panels are hanging.
  • The person who measures is selling. Someone else installs, weeks later, and finds out then what the window actually is.
  • Panels arrive hemmed to a standard drop. A ceiling that is out of level stays out of level, and the eye reads it immediately.
  • Motorization gets added at the end, so the power is wherever there happened to be an outlet.

Dream Wall Studio

  • European fabrics bought for the project, so the width of your window stops deciding the design.
  • Measured on site, window by window, with ceiling height, floor level and stack space taken as they actually are.
  • Hand-crafted ripple fold, so the wave repeats evenly across the whole run instead of crowding at the ends.
  • One team from the first measurement to the last panel, and the same phone number after it is done.
  • Motorized shades specified with the control you will actually use: remote, wall switch, phone, or the home system you already have.

Fabric, making, hardware and installation are quoted as one number, because they are one job.

Selected work

Every window on this page is one of ours.

Photographed in South Florida homes as they were handed over. No catalog rooms and no stock photography, which is rarer in this trade than it should be.

Handed over before the furniture. An empty room is the hardest place to hang drapery, because there is no furniture to distract from a hem that is off.

Textured sheer under a dropped beam. A weave with visible texture reads as fabric and not as film, which is the difference you feel in the room and not in the photo.

How it runs

Five steps, and you are told before each one.

On the job

Choosing the fabric, setting the track, dressing the pleats. Our own team, on our own jobs.

  1. 01

    Consultation, in the room

We look at the windows in their own light, at the hour you actually use the room. Ceiling height, how the furniture sits, how much privacy you want and what the window has to do: block heat, cut glare, or simply dress the glass.

  2. 02

    Measured on site

Every window measured individually, with the ceiling and the floor checked for level. This is also where stack space is decided, meaning where the fabric sits when the drapery is open, which is what keeps the view you paid for.

  3. 03

    Fabric, hardware and control

Fabric and lining chosen against the light in your room, not under showroom spots. Track or rod decided with the ceiling detail in front of us, and for motorized shades, the power and the control decided before anything is ordered.

  4. 04

    Made to those measurements

Panels are cut, seamed and hemmed to the measurements taken in your home. Nothing is pulled from stock sizes, which is why the measurement step is the one that cannot be rushed.

  5. 05

    Installation and dressing

Hung by our own team, with the hem checked against the floor as it actually is. At the end the pleats are dressed and tied so the fabric learns the fold, which is the step most installs skip and the one you notice for years.

Who you will actually deal with

Virginia takes the first meeting, and the last one.

Dream Wall Studio is not a showroom with a sales floor. Virginia Simão built it around a straightforward idea: the person who chooses the fabric with you should also be the person who answers when you call three weeks later.

Seven years sourcing from European and American trade lines, alongside an install team with eleven years of hanging them. She is in the consultation, in the measurement, and in the final walkthrough.

Questions

Answered before you ask.

Why are the three quotes I got so different?
Because they are rarely quoting the same thing. The biggest variable is fullness, meaning how many times the fabric width goes into the finished panel, and it is almost never written on the quote. Lining, hem finishing, the hardware, who installs and whether the motor is included move the number just as much. Ask every quote you have for fullness, lining and hardware in writing, including ours, and the comparison becomes possible.
Do you make the drapery, or is it bought ready-made?
Everything is made to the measurements taken in your home. Ready-made panels come in stock drops, which is why they so often sit an inch off the floor or stop short of the ceiling line. Nothing here is pulled from a stock size.
Can you motorize shades in a house that is already finished?
Yes, and most of our motorized work is retrofit. What changes is the power: where there is no access for wiring, the shade runs on a rechargeable battery, and where there is, we hardwire it. We tell you which one applies at the measurement, before anything is ordered, because the answer affects both the price and how the shade looks at the top.
Will Florida sun ruin the fabric?
Direct sun is hard on everything, which is why it decides the material and not just the look. Solar and sheer weaves are built for glare and heat on the exposure that takes the afternoon sun, and heavier decorative fabrics go where they will not be bleached. We will say which window is which before you choose, rather than after.
Do you do roman shades, roller shades, shutters and valances too?
Yes. Roman shades, roller shades, solar screens, zebra shades, blackout drapery, plantation shutters, cornices and valances are all part of what we make. The work shown on this page is drapery and sheers because that is what we have photographed; ask at the consultation and we will show you the rest in the showroom.
Which areas do you serve?
Palm Beach through Miami-Dade, with most projects in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Highland Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington, Fort Lauderdale, Coral Gables and Pinecrest.
